HISTORY:

Mohair has a long and rich past that dates back to the prehistoric era in what is now modern-day Turkey.

Turkey, mohair

The fabric is created from Angora goat hair, which is local to the area and was first bred for its meat and milk.

Over time, people discovered that the goats’ hair could be spun into a soft and luxurious material. Mohair production became an important industry in the region, and the material was exported to other parts of the world, including Europe, where it was highly valued by royalty and the wealthy.

Mohair’s popularity decreased in the 19th century as textile production grew more automated and cheaper, more accessible materials spread. But in recent years, mohair has made a comeback as customers have grown more interested in eco-friendly and natural materials, and designers have rediscover the material’s special properties and beauty.

Today, mohair production is primarily centered in South Africa and other parts of Africa, where the majority of the world’s Angora goats are raised.

PRODUCTION PROCESS:

First, the Angora goats are sheared, typically once or twice per year, using clippers. The raw mohair fibers are then sorted by hand, with any debris removed.

Next, the fibers are washed in warm water with a mild detergent to remove dirt and oil. After washing, the fibers are rinsed and dried, typically by hanging them in a warm and well-ventilated space. Once the fibers are dry, they are carded to align the fibers and remove tangles.

The fibers are then spun into yarn, using either a traditional spinning wheel or a modern spinning machine. The yarn is then dyed, if desired, and can be woven or knitted.

Throughout the production process, the quality and consistency of the mohair fibers are carefully monitored to ensure that the final product is of high quality and meets the desired specifications.
